What is Roots & Shoots?

Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light, they can break open brick walls. Imagine that the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet. Hundreds of thousands of roots & shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, can break through these walls. We CAN change the world.

- Dr. Jane

The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals and for the environment. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world. Young people identify problems in their communities and take action. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe.

"Waste Free Lunch" Persuasive Writing Pieces from Mrs. Chardon's Class

Do you know how many pounds of trash a kid can throw away at lunchtime a year? 67 pounds! We can stop this by packing a waste-free lunch. I know you might think it is too much work, but it is less trash for the landfills. It will help the environment. I will help you plan ahead and make it. We can buy containers and reuse them. As a matter of fact, it costs less to buy a large container of food and fill our containers than it does to buy the small packaged food. I think packing a waste-free lunch is important because it is good for the environment and all sorts of other reasons. Let’s put those 67 pounds of trash on a diet. Maybe we can make it go all the way down to 0 pounds.
James Grade 3

Did you know that every year a student throws away an estimate of 67 pounds of trash from their lunch? So we (the whole earth) have to prevent that from happening by making a waste-free lunch. In this paper I am going to tell you why it is important to have a waste-free lunch. You can pack a waste-free lunch the night before, but don’t worry I will help you. A waste-free lunch can really help the earth by not throwing away trash. A waste-free lunch is good because of many reasons. One is no trash fills up the landfill, two is it is less work for the custodians, three is less energy is used driving to the landfill, and four is packing your own food is less expensive than buying food that is already packaged. Do you want this earth to be a big ball of trash or do you want it to be a big healthy earth full of recycling and reusing and stuff like that? Let’s make this earth green and healthy. When we run out of spaces to put landfills where is all of that trash going to go? So let’s start. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. If we compost it will help save the environment. If we help and work together we can make this earth green and not a world of garbage. Go green!
